    R is for…

R is for Readathon Over the last several years I’ve taken part in the twice yearly Dewey’s Readathon. I really enjoy taking the time to really get stuck into reading and focus on it for one day. Usually I only do really concentrated bursts of reading on the days when I have long train journeys. If, for example I go to London or Birmingham for a day it’s not at all unusual for me to get through an entire book and maybe part of a second. It’s not something I do too often throughout the year if I’m at home. And I enjoy spending the time really focusing on my…

    Q is for…

Q is for Quickie Salsa M My powerchair is a Quickie Salsa M so what else to write about for Q? I use it daily and pretty much if I leave the house I do so in my powerchair. It’s my independence and so much more than that it’s my freedom. These pictures were taken on the day I got it and it’s no where near as clean looking and is a little battered, three years later. It is however very well loved and a brilliant tool. Despite having had to have many parts replaced and it needing more maintenance than I believe it should do I wouldn’t be without…

    O is for…

O is for Oxford. I live near Oxford and I’m there fairly reguarly.  I tend to prefer Reading for things like shopping because it’s more accessible (although Oxford is improving) but with friends living in Oxford and several things I can only do there I seem to end up in Oxford a couple of times a month. I like places like The Jam Factory to hang out with friends.  I like a wander in Christ Church Meadow but don’t do it very often. And I like the Ashmolean although I can’t really explain why.  I often hear of other things I’d like to do there – talks and groups and…

    N is for…

N is for NaNoWriMo For those not in the know NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month.  It’s a yearly challenge that takes place every November to write 50K words in those thirty days.  I’ve done it several times since 2004.  I’ve won a few times but I’m lost many more.  Only not really because every word written is a win if you think about it. NaNo has been great for me because it got me writing properly.  My first ever long piece of writing was a NaNo project, specifically a very bad Harry Potter fanfiction which before anyone asks was never posted in it’s entireity online.  I think I’d…

    M is for…

M is for Musicals! I love, love, love musicals. I quite like theatre in general but musicals are where my heart really lies.  I’ve seen a great meany in the theatre and I own a lot of soundtracks and listen to them often.  Several musicals I’ve seen more than once. Here is a not exhaustive list of musicals I’ve seen Cats (twice) Grease (maybe 4 times?) Rocky Horror (three times) Legally Blonde The Full Monty The Sound of Music (twice) Avenue Q Sister Act Fame (twice) Hairspray Blood Brothers Rent Wicked Evita Ghost Shrek Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (can’t remember if that’s twice or three times) Les Miserables…

    L is for…

L is for Lost L was going to be for something else but then I realised that under a different name would do for another letter, one I didn’t have something for.  And now as I write this I’m thinking I already said that for one letter and can’t remember which! Oops! Then I thought of something else to write – L is for Lazy – but there’s not a lot to say for that and it led to much debate with myself about whether I’m still lazy.  I was when I was much younger and can still be in many ways but I’m substantially less lazy than I used…

    J is for…

J is for Jokes. OK so this would probably have been better as C is for Comedy but go with it… I love comedy.  Especially live comedy. I went to the comedy club at uni for the first time in my second year it was a friend’s birthday and I’d never thought of going before but she wanted to so I went along.  I was having a really shit day but I really enjoyed it. I went back to comedy club at uni the next week.  And most weeks for the rest of the year and the two years that followed of my uni time. Then I didn’t get to…

    I is for…

I is for Impossible As a disabled person and particularly as one who is both life long disabled and a woman there can be a lot of barriers in my way. Actual physical access is the big one although awareness of that and facilities are improved a lot and the amount they’ve changed just within my lifetime is huge.  That’s not to say there isn’t a long way to go because there is.  I just read an interesting blog by Anika about that. Attitudes and awareness are in many ways a much bigger barrier.  If people refuse to understand why I can’t be carried down a flight of stairs or…

    H is for…

H is for home. Home for me is a flat in Didcot.  I’ve lived here for almost ten years and it’s cluttered and currently very messy in places.  But it’s brilliant. It’s in the perfect location for me – close to town and right by the train station. I don’t need to get taxis to get anywhere which saves me a lot of money. It’s fully adapted to my needs and was as it was built (I’m the only person who has lived here).  It’s not as nice as it was when it was first built and really needs a lick or two of paint in places.  But it’s also…
